she's not waiting on a saviour
For some reason, this song has been driving through my head for the last week. It started in Virginia with the onset of a suffocating zombie-like fog, continued through the layover mind trip of friday and woke me up this morning screamin, "you've gotta give it away."
U2 rarely gets the respect due for Pop, and I could spend hours talking about this is one of the best albums you've never heard, but I'd rather just tell you to click play and listen to this absolutely fantastic apocalyptic pop song.
The song manages to capture the desperation of the central character, while still retaining this wide eyed giddiness that comes along with her resignation to fate. She's tripping through this abyss, but even though the ground is slipping beneath her, she's screaming into the void.
Edge's coarse guitar licks at the beginning of the song, combined with the synth intro and bono's hesitating vocals, only make the breakthrough into the chorus that much more dramatic and chilling. You don't have to watch the music video to feel like listening to this song with the windows wide open. From the first note, this song screams for you to walk out the door, climb into your car, fill the gas tank and passenger seat and just start driving.
don't stop until the sun comes up.
(p.s. i promise i'll write a scathing track review soon. promise)
As the fuel goes down
Stops the car
Puts her feet outside in the rain
She's back on the machine
But it's sweet so far away
She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
Well she don't care what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth
She's not waiting on a saviour to come
She's at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
Well she don't care what it's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth
Slipping away
(The clock tells her that time is slipping)
Slip sliding...tonight
(Minute hands and seconds sticking)
Slipping away
(There's something she might be missing)
The world turns and we get dizzy
(The world turns and we get dizzy)
Slipping away
(Is it spinning for you)
(The way it's spinning for me)
She's living, living next week now
You know she's going to pay it back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon then she'll sleep
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
She already knows it hurts
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth
Last night on earth
Last night...
