we'd like to cover....
there's something about a live concert experience that cannot be replicated perfectly in any other medium than its first presentation. there's nothing inspired or special about that point, but what is inspired/special are the things that you can witness in the unpackaged moments of transcendent power.
whether it be bono screaming at the california crowd during sunday bloody sunday, rattle and hum style.
the arcade fire pulling bowie onstage during "wake up."
hendrix making violent love to the frame of his guitar on the monterey stagefloor.
or just a capacity crowd filling the pews to form an inebriated choral accompaniment to the singer.
whatever it might be, big, small.
its the things that you'll be talking about for the rest of your life,
and why no matter how many times you hit repeat on your iPod, it won't ever be the same.
______
This is probably why I keep downloading bootleg video/audio whenever it comes available- i'm looking for another taste of that powerful wine.
___
long point to say.
sometimes that untouchable experience takes the form of a cover.
these retellings can be cliche, they can be ordinary, they can be straightforward- but the ones that stick out, are the ones that take the original story, keep the background and provide a whole new ending or enviroment.
since hendrix, i'm not sure if there's been a rock band that's showed such a propensity to respin song after song, and, rather than destroying what made the song special, or just adding more syrup- a band that has the guts and inspiration to create brilliant revisions that have just as much flavor and color, if not more, then the original.
the raconteur's covers of gnarls barkley's "crazy" and Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang" have been on repeat in my room for quite awhile.
let me share with you.
