2-24-06 Black Cat: Stars/Magnet
We are here to take the blame
To take the taunts and the shame
We are here to make you feel
It terrifies you, but its real
Stars
I'm not even going to try and write this out as a true review with a
detached observant perspective on the events, I really can't. The
experience that I had Friday night transcends any recounting through
the use of words; but i'll try anyway.
We (jenn and david) arrived at the show about 8:45- doors didnt open till 9:30, so were about the
11th people in line for the show. When the doors opened we entered the
small confines of the Black Cat's club floor, and ended up directly in
front of the stage, with one person in front of us. The club filled
with no more than 200 people, and Magnet took the stage about 10:15...

This man came out drinking a glass of red wine, and his voice was just about as smooth.
He created riffs on this instrument, recorded them as he was playing
them, and looped them back through to create a musical production that
was sultry and soulfully powerful. He made me weep in my soul as I
listened.
"If all you ladies will scream Magnet, and hold that out," said
even."i'll feel like one of the beatles if you'll do that for me."

The crowd willingly obliged the bashful norwegian, and he created a perfect opening canvas for the rest of the evening.

Stars took the stage in darkness, running out taking their places onstage,
and saluting to the screaming crowd. They opened with a theme song that
they've created about, well, stars.. then transitioning into "set
yourself on fire".. I can't even begin to describe how beautiful the
show was, it was the best show i've ever seen.
Their sound translates incredibly well, with seven
members of the band playing everything from a violin to a trumpet,
harmonica and typical instruments. The band interacted with the
audience, Torquil, the lead singer has incredible charisma and
embodies every word of every song with this intense passion and
urgency.
inhale the powder from the science class, yeah nearly dying felt so cool
your face is all that hasnt changed
you're reassembled just like me
but when i reach to touch your hand
you stroke mine gently

Amy is probably the most disconcerting member of Stars, her voice
doesnt seem to match her physical body. She swayed around the stage,
danced, and had her own personally significant hand motions that meant
something to her. her voice is absolutely gorgeous live.. and
blows you away...
Don't go. Say you'll stay
Spend a lazy Sunday in my arms
I won't take anything away

The rest of the band was equally impressive, but with Torq and Amy
playing right in front of me, it was hard to take my eyes from them.
In a cage where only one thing could be free
And it's not you and I

They played songs from all three albums, and left me breathless. Torq
touched my hand twice, the second time he held onto my hand, holding it
tightly as he sang. Amy ran her fingertips over my palm and smiled.
Ageless beauty
Cruelty makes its holes
But on the shoreline
Time will hold its promise
We will always be a light

Torq hung from the rafters, singing to the audience and drawing them into his world..
You never had a chance you know,
Incurable romantics never do,He held a flame I wasn't born to carry,
I'll leave the dying stuff up to you,

When they played "He Lied About Death,"
Torq dedicated it to Dick Cheney, and his shooting abilities.. chanting
"keep drinking, keep shooting, until all of you are dead, keep
drinking, keep shooting."
As he screamed that refrain out, the music
intensified and the song began its angry invectives against a certain
Texan.
what gives you the right?
to f--- with our lives?
a devil born in paradise
a liar loves to lie
..
I hope your drunken daughters are gay
you scare the love out of here
like an ape in a cage
small white man in a rage...

They closed their set with "Your Ex-Lover is Dead"
They came out, and played an incredible four song encore...
finishing with "Calendar Girl"
I dreamed I was dying; as I so often do
And when I awoke I was sure it was true
I ran to the window; threw my head to the sky
And said whoever is up there, please don't let me die
Torq finished the show, leading the crowd as they sang in unison "I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive"
Leaving the show, there could be no doubt that we were alive..

stars was there to make us all feel...
and it was quite an experience... quite an experience.

Okay, so I realize this is REALLY old. But I spent this evening trying to relive this amazing show and came across this post on Google. Would you mind sharing your flickr username? I'd love to see the rest of your photos.
